What does a turbo intercooler do?

Postby shamcharanjit » Sat Sep 24, 2011 9:03 am

An intercooler is placed in the airflow path between the turbocharger and the engine intake in order to cool the air after it has been compressed by the turbo. Compressing air heats it up. By cooling it back down, the air becomes denser. This means more air molecules go into the cylinder. This (when mixed with the proper amount of fuel) increases engine power compared to a non-intercooled engine.

Ya! Nice explanation.! And basically intercooler is an air to air heat exchanger..It dissipates heat from compressed air to the atmospheric air via a small radiator tat usually sits beneath the engine radiator! But since the compressed air had to travel a long way through intercooler before entering the cyclinder, initial throttle response may be weak and it's advisable to start the engine and leave it in idling for about a minute before accelerating..!

It's not just that colder air has more molecules - compressed air (which is what the TC is producing anyway) has a lot more molecules than required. The intercooler is there because we (also) need to cool down the intake charge which would otherwise push up the temperature inside the combustion chamber - and cause pre-ignition. Esp. under full throttle - full boost conditions, when pre-ignition is detrimental to both power output as well as life of pistons.

Don't know more about it but its good to use in car and it can be helpful in enhancing performance of car as well.

To put it in simple terms it is a heat exchanger and it helps the intake air to cool down and if you might ask why so basically a lot of times when designing the engine one very important factor is the tendency of the engine to knock which happens when the fuel and air mixture self ignites, so the intake temperature can sometimes be a limiting factor as to how high can you go with the boost levels etc so to extract the best performance out of it and keep the engine healthy and safe we use the intercooler !!
